Growing up in Soweto, all we knew was that you just need to stay away from all bodies of water. A lot of kids would drown there, and so it would be said that a snake took them. There's always mythical creatures that take people. It's a world of mystery, but it's also a world of loss, and that changes the culture of any kind of water relationship that you could have had.
